“Distribute gathers evenly” is, I guess, the sewing equivalent of “repeat last row 239 times”? Short and concise, but takes forever. And on top of that it’s super difficult to do it really evenely. Or maybe it’s just me. Opinions?

I totally agree, and I like your comparison with the knitting instructions, it’s so true!
the only way I can do it is by taking a deep breath first, having a cup of coffee, a good radio programm or a podcast and a box full of pins: just like on your photo!
maybe that’s the reason why some prefer pleats rather than gathers
I bought a “ruffling” foot for my machine a few months ago but haven’t got up the gumption to use it yet…
